The Year Of The Earth Ox

The Rat race has finally ended! January 26th marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The fast moving year of the Rat brought us many changes. National and world events moved too quickly last year for most of us to comprehend what was happening both personally and globally.

If you have felt like a rat on a treadmill, you can finally take a deep breath! Most of us will welcome the slower more methodical approach to life that the year of the Earth Ox will bring. This doesn't mean that you can stop taking care of business. Instead, like the ox, you can slowly plow through the problems that were brought to light over the last year and you will be less likely to make mistakes. Don't be alarmed, but you may even find some hidden issues that have been buried deep beneath the surface. The good news is that as you patiently dig through your personal life, new solutions and innovative ways of accomplishing tasks can now come to light.

Between now and January 14, 2010, when we enter the year of the Metal Tiger, is the time for planning, preparing, and keeping your focus on what matters most to you. The Earth Ox is slow, industrious, and hard-working. This is the winning formula to follow in order to reap the benefits of the new year. If you crave the adrenaline rush that speed offers, you may find this a challenge and your lesson for the year will be to develop patience. My recommendation: take a deep breath and surrender to the flow.

If managing your time is an ongoing issue, you will find scheduling and timing much easier this year. You won't be forced to make so many quick decisions needing immediate action.

The Earth Ox indicates that 2009 will be another auspicious year for earth-based and “green” businesses, small business owners, and individual entrepreneurs--especially for those who have "green" as part of their mission. Interest in sustainability and conservation will increase globally. Consumers will be interested in basic necessities and have a continued interest in health related services and products. Fashion fads are out and styles will be more conservative.
The economy will continue to experience ups and downs. Overall it will be slightly better than 2008 and we will experience slow, steady growth.

Feng Shui Grandmaster Lin Yun recommends that we each carry a lucky rat/mouse charm this year. He teaches that when the Ox sees the Rat, it brings him much happiness. If you are born under the sign of the Horse or Goat or don’t resonate with Rat energy, you can carry a snake/rooster charm instead.
He calls this year "The Goose Struts The Cow Bows". He counsels us to be like the ox--hardworking, sincere, and to maintain a low profile this year--and to not be like the goose who has no particular talents, but struts around like he's the king of the universe. He also recommends that each day we perform a good deed or act of generosity.

General information about the
symbolism of the Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year is auspicious because it brings in new energy and offers us a fresh start, along with the opportunity to bring more fortunate blessings into our life.
To get the most from the year, it's considered lucky to clean your home during the days preceding the New Year. (It's considered bad luck to clean on the day itself.)
This is also is an auspicious time for removing negative and stagnant energy by doing a ch'i cleansing ritual or space clearing, if you haven't done one recently. This allows the good ch'i to enter your home and immediately transform your space.
May the blessings of the New Year fill your heart with joy as you develop and use the virtues of the Earth Ox to make the most of the year ahead!
