2007 - The Year Of The Fire Pig
by Suzanne Metzger

The 2007 Chinese Lunar New Year falls on February 18th. This marks the beginning of the year of the Fire Pig, which will continue until the Earth Rat takes over in 2008.

The Pig, also called the Boar, is a naturally yin animal, which means he is usually gentle, receptive, laidback, and yielding. People born during the Year of the Pig are generally fun to be around. They are honest, sincere, and can be very sensitive and caring. They are loyal, diplomatic, good listeners, and in Feng Shui terms, can be very helpful people.

This sign correlates with the Western astrological sign of Scorpio and is associated with the Water element. Since 2007 is a fire year, this can be upsetting to the Pig’s naturally watery nature. His normally easygoing disposition can be challenged. Unlike their barnyard counterpart, those born under the sign of the Pig are usually very clean, have a good sense of style, and prefer elegant home décor and surroundings. They are fun loving and enjoy planning parties and events.

According to HH Grandmaster Professor Lin-Yun Rinpoche, the Pig is the most blessed of all of the animals of the Chinese zodiac. According to legend, while most of the other animals are hard at work, Ms. or Mr. Piggy is not obligated to do anything. This doesn’t mean that those born under the sign of the pig aren’t busy. As a matter of fact, they can be quite industrious.

On the negative side, the usually happy-go-lucky Pig can be hot-tempered when aroused. He can also be pessimistic, quite competitive, and be a bit of a know-it-all.

To benefit most from the Fire Pig year, flood your life with all sorts of beauty. This can include beautiful music, trips to art galleries, attending theatre performances, indulging in delightful eating experiences, upgrading your home décor, revamping your wardrobe, or simply spending time enjoying the beauty found everywhere in nature. It can be easy to overdo this year, so proceed in moderation.

Because this year is ruled by the Fire element, it’s a more active time in general. Don’t be surprised though if, when you do stop, it’s difficult to get going again. This is okay though, because without rest the Fire element can burn itself out.

The energy is more sensuous this year. During mealtime concentrate on eating slowly and savoring the process. The Pig loves social events, so plan gatherings that include food.Pigs are romantic creatures making this a wonderful time to rekindle the passion in your marriage. Single people may have more opportunities to meet a partner or playmate this year.

Between now and the New Year is an especially good time to contemplate and prepare to achieve your 2007 goals. Ask yourself what you can do NOW to begin the process. Just identifying the first action that you need to take and scheduling a time to do it will begin this process.

This is an excellent time to clear away the energy of the old year, particularly if it wasn’t successful. The Chinese traditionally clean their homes thoroughly before the New Year. They toss or fix any items that are broken or not in use, make needed home repairs, and pay off debts.

Many folks place a symbol on their front door representing what they want to create in the New Year. If you wish to follow Chinese tradition, you could use a fish to represent abundance, a dragon for power, or seeds or melons if you wish children. Otherwise, use your imagination to come up with a personal symbol of whatever you are trying to manifest. You can also place that symbol in the area of the Bagua related to your goal.

Piglets, children born in the year of the Pig, will have the opposing qualities of Fire and Water. They will have warm, magnetic personalities along with, hopefully, only occasional surprise tantrums. Their volatile nature will create an exciting atmosphere for parents. They will be energetic, confident, and full of good will. They are known to bring good luck to people around them. The Fire Pig is usually lucky with money. Adults born in 1947, the last year of the Fire Pig share the characteristics of the children to be born in 2007.It’s considered fortunate to have a child in a Pig year. As a matter of fact, in the Korean culture, 2007 is considered to be an especially auspicious year to have a child because it is the year of the Golden Pig—something that only happens every 600 years.

Grandmaster Lin Yun tells us that this is the year that “Five Blessings Descend Upon Your Doorstep.” He suggests that when opportunity knocks, you should “go for it” and not hesitate. He mentioned this in regard to business partnership, looking for a new job, making a marital commitment, buying or constructing a new home, purchasing investments, and signing contracts.

He predicts that weather patterns will continue to be irregular. Since it is a Fire year, heat will be a major factor. He also believes that there will be a number of natural disasters involving water and that war will continue under the influence of the Fire Pig. Since the Pig is the last animal in the Chinese zodiac, any destructive tendencies caused by Water combining with Fire, will have a purifying and renewing effect.

Grandmaster tells us that this can be an especially challenging year for those born in the year of the Pig, Monkey, and Snake. It is believed that when the Pig and the Tiger come together, whatever happens as a result of their meeting will remove any adversities of the moment. He recommends that all signs carry a three-dimensional tiger charm--unless you are a Snake or a Monkey or do not resonate with Tiger energy. In that case, you may carry a Rabbit and Goat (or Sheep) combination.

Fortunate blessing in the New Year. May the fun and light side of the Fire Pig fill your heart!
