BAGUA AREAS ~ FAMILY

For the past three months this newsletter has concentrated on general information about the Bagua. (Go to Articles Archive to read these articles.) For the next few months we will concentrate on the individual areas of the Bagua, beginning with Family.

FAMILY ~ It all begins here
The Family area is a wonderful place to begin our journey through the Bagua. The I Ching assigns the time from early March to early April to the Wood element and the Family area. In March, green shoots and buds make their appearance along with other new beginnings that accompany the dawning of Spring. It’s traditionally time to spring clean, clear clutter, and to repair and refresh our surroundings in general.

Family relates not only to our family of origin, the family we may have married into, or the people we now live with, but also to the many groups we belong to. In fact, the larger context of Family includes all of the people we gather into groups with including teams we play on, work groups, and even the people in the community where we live.

In the past, families worked together as a unit on small farms or as a team supporting the family business. Now the different groups we work and play with often replace our family of origin and even become our extended family. Many of us don’t even know our distant blood relatives.

Like the roots of a tree that often travel deep into the earth, Family also refers to our ancestral roots. The energy of those people far back in our lineage (perhaps even hundreds or thousands of years) are a link to our ancient roots both genetically and psychologically. We, in turn, carry that energy out to our direct descendents and beyond far out into the future.

Teachers, mentors, and all of the wise beings in our life are also linked to the Family area because they help us to remember who we really are and connect us to the very essence of our being.

Enhance this area whenever there are existing family problems, if you are beginning a new project, you wish to make a fresh start in any area of your life, or whenever you find yourself in a situation where you need to promote yourself (such as opening a new business). If you are in a new relationship, recently married, or starting a new family, make sure that this area is well-balanced. Also, if you are experiencing problems with your legs or feet you will benefit from placing a remedy in this area.

Possible enhancements for this area of your home or yard are healthy fast growing plants and herbs, hardwood trees, anything representing the wood element, family photos (especially those in wood frames), art or furniture inherited from your family or others close to you, and antiques. You should love all of the enhancements that you choose; so placing a beautiful heirloom that you hate in the family area is more likely to resurrect negative emotions and feelings from the past than to create positive healing energy.

The color green can also be used as a powerful enhancement providing individual members of the household do not personally exhibit an overabundance of the wood element. If any member of the household is extremely impatient, jealous, or stubborn it may be best to go easy on the green with the exception of plants. Instead concentrate on more personal enhancements such as artwork depicting groups of happy people and individual pictures of beloved family members. As we’ve discussed in previous newsletters, optimum Feng Shui always balances the elements of the space with the elements of individual household members.

May all of your “families grow & blossom!
Suzanne
