2006 - The Year of the Fire Dog

Whew! Time to catch our breath and to slow down! January 29th marked the 2006 Chinese Lunar New Year and the beginning of the year of the Fire Dog, which will continue thru February 17th 2007

With the departure of the Wood Rooster, this year will bring some beneficial changes—especially for those of us who are not naturally endowed with the focus and ambitious nature of the wood element and the precise, quick actions and responses of the rooster. When you think of a rooster, you think of a feisty little creature controlling the barnyard. The rooster coupled with the wood element created chaos for many of us who are a little more laid back—like the dog!

Last year things got quite stirred up. Time was often an issue. You may have felt that you were always behind, forced to make quick decisions, or that you needed to act faster than you wanted. Thankfully, at least for most of us, a Wood Rooster year only comes around every 60 years.

The Fire Dog year brings with it some interesting energies also. The Dog, a generally mellow soul who balances sleep with activity, exhibits a more active fiery nature this year. To fully take advantage of this year’s contrasting qualities, be sure to balance your schedule with hard work, plenty of play, and lots of sleep.

Since the dog is a naturally earthy fellow, the fire of the year will blend with earth and make this an auspicious time for earth based or “green” businesses, small business owners, and individual entrepreneurs. Large corporate interests may not feel as blessed. Consumers will be more interested in purchasing essentials and health related items and services and less interested in buying anything that could be considered frivolous or unnecessary. There will be a slight shift away from consumerism toward sustainability and the conservation of our resources.

Politically the trend will be more liberal. However, people will be conservative with their spending and interested in a balanced budget, both personally and governmentally.

The economy will continue to experience ups and downs, but, overall it will be good and we will experience slow, steady growth. Unemployment should begin to level off and drop. Businesses trying to expand should proceed cautiously and risk taking should be avoided.

Feng Shui Grandmaster Lin Yun calls this year “The Dog That Saves Its Master.” He teaches us that it is important to visualize the positive energy of the Dog guiding us through any problems we may face during the year and that we should envision our world leaders being guided by the positive qualities of the dog.
He also suggests that this fiery dog energy could cause sporadic outbreaks of fire in the form of personal and global conflict, explosions, volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters. Extreme shifts in weather are likely causing cooler summers and warmer winters.

He recommends that for luck everyone carry a three-dimensional Rabbit during the Year of the Dog. He tells us that whenever a dog meets a rabbit, the path to wealth will be apparent. If you’ve been wondering what’s down the rabbit hole, now you know! (If you don’t resonate with rabbit energy, the second choice would be a combination of a horse and tiger.)

Puppies—those children born this year—will be creative, responsible, reliable, fair-minded, trustworthy, compassionate, and loyal. They are resourceful. When playing alone, they can entertain themselves for long periods of time by making up their own games. Don’t leave them alone too long though, or they will become anxious and afraid. Like their animal counterpart, they can be nosy and inquisitive. They usually get along well with other children and adults alike.

Adults who were born in the year of the dog (1910, 1922. 1934 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, and1994) share the same characteristics, plus they are hard workers and usually live in a clean, well-organized home with lots of creature comforts such as overstuffed pillows and places to lounge around.

Overall, this will be a good year. The dog is man’s loyal friend and protector.

May the blessings of the New Year fill your heart with joy as you develop and use the virtues of the Fire Dog to make the most of the year ahead!
