February -- The Season of Earth, Sweetness, & LoveThe I Ching reminds us that the primary element of this season is Earth and sweet is the taste associated with this season. (A box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day, anyone?) In addition to the physical sense of taste, there is a more subtle way of engaging taste that opens a path to experiencing more of the sweetness of life. This special kind of sweetness is what lifts our knowledge and experience of love to a higher octave--to that of unconditional love. When the Earth element is in balance, both personally and in the Feng Shui of our surroundings, there is a natural flow of peace, joy, love, and abundance into to our lives. We feel nurtured and supported by our activities and relationships, and our creativity and joy flow naturally. It is then easy to feel acceptance and a loving energy toward others--even toward those people who act in ways that are unacceptable to us or who have different principals and ideals than our own. Obviously, our romantic relationships also benefit. Some of the
common personal indications that the Earth element is either out of balance
or has been overpowered by other elements are: On a more global level, I believe we’re experiencing a major Earth imbalance. Collectively we’re feeling insecurity, a lack of grounding (indicated by wide fluctuations in the stock market and difficulty in making personal decisions), and many people are operating as if they are alone in the world. In areas where there is a high incidence of road rage and other violence, the Earth element is being displaced by an excess of the Wood element. Although there is a grass roots movement to regain a sense of community and teamwork, there are even more individuals who feel no connection with others or the planet. One of the easiest ways to balance relationship issues is to enhance the knowledge area. This area teaches us that self-cultivation is the key to creating lasting and nurturing relationships and that, in order to do this, it is essential to have and maintain a strong sense of self. We must be able to honor both our own personal boundaries and those of others. Also, the I Ching teaches us that the Knowledge area is favored energetically during this time of year. Some simple enhancements can be made with color. Blues, especially ranging from pale to medium, are particularly good for the Knowledge area. Also, including some of the earth tones can be beneficial. In addition to enhancing Knowledge, some folks will find it helpful to balance the Earth element in their surroundings and/or to do a personal elemental cure for Earth.* Fortunate
