Feng Shui and The Garden (Part Three)
Feng Shui Notes - August 2006

Last month we began to explore the application of the Five Elements to the garden and in June we looked at how the senses of sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste can either enhance or detract from your garden’s Feng Shui. This month we will look at driveways and walkways into your property, patio lighting, and wind chimes. If you did not receive the previous newsletters and wish to read them, go to Feng Shui Consulting Services newsletters.

An ideal driveway and/or walkway curves gently as it enters your property and moves toward your entrance. If your pathways are straight, consider adding splashes of color along the way. This can be accomplished by placing potted plants or curved flowerbeds on the sides of the walk or driveway.

Feng Shui is an earth-based art and science developed over thousands of years of close observation of nature. There are very few straight lines in nature. Unfortunately, the design of modern homes and buildings and the layout of most cities is based on straight lines that create fast-moving energy. Straight lines, particularly long ones, cause energy to move so quickly that it fails to nourish us. An important tool of Feng Shui is to be able to recognize and remedy this problem.

To assure that new opportunities flow easily into your life, prune back any overgrown trees or bushes near your walkways that are preventing easy access to your property or keeping light from shining onto any of your entrances.

If you display statues or other garden accessories anywhere on your property, consider your current goals and intentions, along with the area of the Bagua where they are located. (For information on the Bagua, see the Bagua on this site. Objects don’t necessarily need to be matched to the corresponding area, but they should be compatible.

Opt for indirect lighting, if you spend time on your porch or patio at night. Low garden lamps, candles, or exterior wall sconces work well. Avoid using direct overhead lights that cause severe shadows.

Wind chimes help to wake up sleepy energy. Placed near a door they invite opportunity and give the adult occupants (or owners in the case of a business) more authority. Try to position them near the door and, if possible, shelter them from the direct wind.

May your path be filled with radiant ch’i!

Class Offerings:

FENG SHUI & VISION plus NATURAL EYESIGHT IMPROVEMENT

Saturday, August 19th – 9:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m.
Learn about the structural and placement features in buildings that influence your vision and the health of your eyes. AND, learn techniques for improving your eyesight.

This fast-paced, experiential class is packed full of information about vision and how to maintain and improve the health of your eyes. The basics of eyesight improvement are presented in a playful and unique format to assist you in integrating natural vision activities into your daily life. (Before becoming a full-time Feng Shui Consultant nine years ago, I spent ten years helping people improve their eyesight naturally.)

Natural vision training is especially appropriate for people who are nearsighted, farsighted, have astigmatism, and presbyopia ("middle-aged" vision). I find that my greatest success as a Natural Vision Instructor has been with folks who are nearsighted and those who have middle-aged problems up to +2.00. This class is also recommended for people who want to maintain good eyesight and learn how to care for their eyes. (People with other vision problems are welcome and are expected to benefit. However, the class is designed to assist people with the problems mentioned above. Please phone to see if this class would be appropriate for you.)

The Feng Shui information will be woven throughout the class and is based on 18 years of study, practical experience, and observation.
