FENG SHUI NOTES - June 2010

Boost Your Feng Shui With Houseplants

Live houseplants can be an excellent source of ch’i and powerfully boost your Feng Shui! Providing they are healthy and well maintained, plants can help to balance your Feng Shui by adding life, visual enrichment, and give you a connection to nature.

They have the added benefit of oxygenating and purifying the air. Also, certain plants can help to absorb and neutralize electromagnetic energy (EMFs).

Feng Shui Issues that can be resolved by the addition of houseplants:

  • Sharp corners, poison arrows, and harsh angles may be softened or eliminated by placing either a tall plant or a hanging one with flowing foliage next to the problem area to shield those places where you spend a significant amount of time.
  • Plants can be used in a long hallway to slow down energy that is moving too quickly and to break up straight lines.
  • Place a plant in front of a window that is straight across from a door or another window to stop the loss of energy.
  • Add tall plants with a strong vertical line to make an area, such as a basement or a room with a low ceiling, feel lighter and more open. These spaces can inhibit personal growth and cause occupants to feel trapped.
  • Taller plants such as Palms, Peace Lilies, and Fichus trees can be used to symbolically lift a sloped ceiling.
  • The addition of plants to bathrooms and other rooms with an overabundance of water can help to balance the Water element.

Feng Shui Friendly Houseplants
Lucky Bamboo is easy to grow, roots quickly in water, and doesn’t require much light.

If you’re using lucky bamboo in an area where the Water element needs to be toned down, make sure it’s firmly planted in soil rather than sitting in water.

The Philodendron, with its pointy leaves, can help to increase the Fire element. It also grows well in areas where lighting is low or indirect.

The Peace Lilyalso flourishes with indirect light. Its white flowers make it perfect for any area needing the addition of the Metal element.

The round, coin-like leaves of African Violets and Jade represent wealth and abundance and can enhance the Wealth area.

Fichus, Palms, Ivy, and Spider Plants are known for their ability to freshen the air and can help to remove formaldehyde and other harmful pollutants from the air.

Are silk plants as an acceptable alternative?
Live plants are best, but if you have limited light or are unable to care for them, it’s better to use high quality silk plants and flowers. Dying plants generate negative energy, and should be removed as soon as possible.

Also, dried plants and flowers have lost their life force. If you do have any in your space, replace them often and make sure that they are vibrant and clean. If you notice your own energy feels lifeless or stagnant, replace them with silk plants or another type of décor.

Be alive & flourish!
