Create A Magical Holiday By Decorating The Feng Shui Way!
Feng Shui Notes - December 2005
More is not always better—especially when it comes to decorating.
Decorating adds to the ch’i of your home, but some rules apply.
One is that energy should flow freely. When there is too much in a space,
ch’i is blocked and the energy of your family can also be blocked.
Store collectibles and possibly even some furniture to make room for your
holiday décor. If you live in a small space and have abundant decorations,
rather than putting them all out, rotate them from year to year. This
rule also applies during the balance of the year. If you usually display
many knickknacks, consider rotating them seasonally or even monthly.
Here’s a simple guideline to help you judge whether a piece of furniture
should be removed or a decoration should not be displayed: If you need
to turn your body or adjust your posture in any way to move around it,
you’re blocking the flow of ch’i. The harmful effect is usually
subtle, but cumulative.
If you are really pressed for time or feeling especially stressed this
year, think about decorating minimally or perhaps not at all. For simplicity,
consider limiting your decorations to either the addition of lighting
or only decorating your entrance. Both offer a tremendous benefit and
usually take less time.
By decorating either inside or outside your main entrance (or both), you
are inviting opportunity and good energy into your home or office. The
same is also true for your office or any business building.
Well placed lighting in your yard and home always uplifts the chi and
adds a magical touch. In Feng Shui, lighting is especially important because
it activates stagnant energy. It also mobilizes the eyes and contributes
to the fire element. As general rule, the fire element needs to be increased
during the Winter.
When you string lights in or outside of your home, in trees, or in your
windows, they can spark a playful, fiery energy even in people who may
not be naturally playful. This festive touch brings a smile to the faces
of most people. The lights also cause our eyes to dance by stimulating
subtle movements (called saccadic movements) in the eye and actually help
us to see more clearly.
Placing either candles or a menorah in your front window helps connect
you to your neighborhood. It’s a beautiful gesture that contributes
positive energy. Lights in the window can also promote personal clarity
and stimulate your intuitive abilities.
Have a joyful and insightful holiday,
Suzanne
