THE METAL ELEMENT (Part One)
Feng Shui Notes – October 2006

Autumn is an excellent time to strengthen your personal boundaries. According the Ching, which is one of the root teachings that Feng Shui is based on, the Metal element is strongest at this time. When Metal is at its peak, there is an enhanced opportunity to recognize problems and to clear away anything that is no longer of value. This makes Fall the natural time for strengthening personal boundaries and committing to activities that further your life goals. This can include setting up workable routines, time management, handling relationship issues, and even clearing clutter.

Metal relates to the Children and Helpful People areas of the Bagua. (see article archives for more info on these areas.) The Children’s area, which includes creativity, is especially strong until mid-October, making this period good for setting aside time to work on new creative ideas and to recommit to old projects that still excite you. However, if you’ve lost interest, this is also a good time to toss them!

Many artists and writers find it difficult to stick to a definite work schedule. This also applies to people who are self-employed, work out of their homes, and anyone who simply needs more time to pursue activities related to health or well-being.

Committing to a schedule is a form of boundary setting. People who are either low in the Metal element or who have a Metal imbalance find it especially difficult to establish personal boundaries. Handling time is only one example.

BALANCING THE FIVE ELEMENTS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AREAS OF FENG SHUI. We not only need to balance the elements in our environment, but we need to take our personal elemental makeup into consideration. Most people have some personal elemental imbalance. Feng Shui consultants are trained to take that into consideration when working with your home or office.

Well-meaning friends and/or family often fail to understand that phoning or dropping by during your work time, even if only for a moment, interferes with your ability to be productive. It’s up to you to create boundaries that limit interruptions. Often defining the right schedule is a process of trail and error. It’s okay to adjust it as your needs change. What’s important, though, is to establish and stick to a schedule that sanctifies your creative time and allows you full self-expression.

Educate the people in your life by telling them not to interrupt you during that time—unless there’s an actual emergency. Yes, you must TELL them and you may need to do it more than once! Don’t expect them to intuit it. They need to know without a doubt that you are serious.

If someone does happen to phone or drop in during your productive time, you have to stay true to your commitment and let them know that you are working and can’t visit. Believe it or not, after awhile most interruptions will cease.

If you would like to explore the issue of setting and keeping personal boundaries, private mentoring may be useful. Phone me at (719) 260-7207 for more information.

Next month we will continue to look at the issue of boundaries and explore Metal adjustments that can have a positive impact.

May your boundaries be strong and balanced! Suzanne
