Get A Jump on Spring Cleaning With Feng Shui
Feng Shui Notes - February 2006

Late winter is the perfect time to get a head start on spring-cleaning, clutter clearing, and organizing projects.

Nature purges her environment during the winter months by stripping leaves and dead vegetable matter from the landscape to make way for the riches of spring. We can also benefit by clearing away the old and lightening up our environments in preparation for the warmer months ahead. The I Ching, which is one of the roots of Feng Shui, concurs with Nature. It advises us that this is a good time to focus inward and clean out the old in preparation for the new.

New Year’s resolutions that have fallen by the wayside can be reestablished now—including any clutter-clearing goals. Consider what your life would be like if you didn’t spend so much time looking for misplaced items and papers. Right now you can successfully begin to release anything that you no longer need and all of those past treasures that no longer bring you joy.

Where To Start
Motivate yourself to organize and toss by first visualizing how you want your home to look. If you have difficulty seeing your entire home organized and clutter-free, pick one small area such as a closet or a part of a room.

Next, break a larger job into small bite-size pieces by listing each part of the job and note the order the jobs should be done. Then commit yourself to working on one bite-sized piece at a time. Most people find it better to limit their work time to an hour or less before taking a break.

If you’re familiar with the Bagua, it makes sense to start in the area of the Bagua corresponding to your most challenging area of life. (For info on the Bagua, go to www.fengshuiconsultingservices.net/archive.htm

Even small areas of clutter are a drain on your energy. They cause the energy around you to be stagnant and impact your Feng Shui. This includes stuff shoved into closets, drawers, and even outside storage. Subconsciously, stagnant ch’I is sending out subtle signals to others that something is not quite right in your life.

There are scores of symbolic correspondences to what clutter in a specific area of a property or around a specific piece of furniture may mean. Let’s just look at the impact of clutter in one area—the bedroom.

In addition to interfering with restful sleep, clutter in the bedroom can make getting in touch with your inner-self challenging. It can interfere with your clarity in general, your ability to be clear about your real wants and needs, and your ability to actualize your goals.

Having books and other items piled on the floor next to your bed can contribute to depression and may also lead to a desire for escape or radical change.

Most people who have studied even a little Feng Shui know that hiding clutter under the bed is a “no-no” and that even neat storage there limits the amount of ch’i, or energy, that can nourish you during sleep.

Clutter over your entire bedroom is often connected to lower self-esteem, depression, and having the grounding needed to be a part of the “real” world.

May your transition into spring be light and easy!
