Summer & The Fire Element
Do You Need A Touch of Fire?

Mid-June to late July is the period assigned to the Fire Element and the Fame area of the Bagua by the I Ching. It also relates to summer in general.

One of the qualities of Fire is playfulness. This makes summer and the warmer months a natural time to add more play, fun, and laughter.

In Feng Shui we like to have at least a touch of each element in every room, and more in some areas. Fire is no exception.

A way to add Fire is to add small touches of bright colors—true reds, vibrant pinks, and bright oranges. This can be easily done through artwork and accessories.

A bouquet of bright flowers can bring a spark of fire into a lifeless corner. Think of the colorful annuals that dot the landscape during the summer months. They are eye-catching, dramatic, and always noticed. They demonstrate the Fire element at its finest.

Other ways to increase the Fire element are to add triangular shapes, sharp angles, jagged edges, fireplaces, and candles.

Be careful though. A little Fire can go a long way. Too much Fire in the Wealth area can “burn” up your money. Too much in Family can spark arguments.

Sharp angles often cause poison arrows (i.e. a sharp corner or pointed object aimed directly at your body or home). If a poison arrow is aimed directly toward spaces where you spend a lot of time, you may suffer pain and other afflictions in the part of the body that they energetically touch.

Homes with many angles and slanted walls usually have an abundance of Fire—often too much. In general, too many angles can contribute to a variety of health and other issues.

If you have heart problems, high blood pressure, reoccurring inflammatory conditions, regularly feel “burned out”, are easily agitated, have anxiety attacks, or feel overheated much of the time, it’s best to lessen the Fire element.

You can do this by adding the Water element and/or the Earth element to your environment. (However, don’t completely remove the Fire element.)

On the other hand, if you feel chronically depressed, have poor circulation, low energy, or lack enthusiasm, it would be good to add more Fire to your environment. You can increase Fire by adding the Wood element or more Fire to your environment.

Next month’s article will feature information on the Fame area.

May the playful qualities of Fire fill your heart!
