Safety, Security, and A Strong Foundation

The Family Area

For the next few months this newsletter will concentrate on the individual Bagua areas, beginning with Family.

In the past, I’ve always written about the Family area in the spring. However, since this area is related to new beginnings and strong foundations, I think it’s appropriate to feature it now.

Collectively. we are in a time of great change. Many folks are “in transition” and our planetary foundations seem to be wildly shifting—both as the earth literally re-adjusts her skin and as we watch governments around the world transition into new forms.

Think of these changes as a dance. You can move gracefully through intricate steps, but you must start and end in a place of stability. In dance, stability begins with the base of your body, which includes your feet and legs.

In Feng Shui, the Family area is connected to the essence of our being. It’s our foundation. It’s no mistake that the feet and legs are connected to this area. If you’re not experiencing stability, visualize your legs and feet rooting into the earth like a tree with deep roots. This area is related to the Wood element and trees are a powerful symbol of balance here.

In Feng Shui, our view of Family includes not only our family of origin, but also the family we married into, the people we regularly hang out with, and the many groups we belong to. In a loose sense, it even includes all of the people in the community where we live.

In the past, families worked together as a unit on small farms or as a team supporting the family business. Now the groups we work and play with often replace our family of origin.

Your teachers, mentors, and other wise beings in your life are also linked to the Family area because they help you to remember who you really are and connect you to the core of your being.

The Family area represents safety,

security, & a strong foundation.

If this area is cluttered, in disrepair, or missing, it may indicate family problems or that the health of one or more family members is at risk.

Simply clearing clutter in this area and making necessary repairs can go a long way to help balance this area of life.

Enhance this area when:

  • you feel like your foundations are shifting and that you’re out of control.
  • you’re experiencing problems with your legs or feet.
  • you are beginning a new project.
  • you wish to make a fresh start in any area of your life.
  • you need to promote yourself.

If you are in a new relationship, recently married, starting a new family, or if anyone in your family is experiencing health problems, make sure that this area is clean and free from clutter.

Common Enhancements:

  • Healthy plants are great enhancements for this area.
  • Photos of family members or healthy trees in wooden frames
  • Representations of water
  • The colors green and black
  • Objects or décor made of wood

Avoid:

  • Metal objects
  • Candles
  • The colors white and red

Reflect on your Family area now as an opportunity to move forward in life and to create new beginnings.

May your Family be strong & healthy!
